NeuroConnections

NeuroConnections is a club for ‘Berg students who have interests in neuroscience, whether they are neuroscience majors or not. The club regularly conducts community outreach and a variety of informational and social events. If you’re interested in getting involved in any of the activities below, please contact Dr. Gotthard at gretchengotthard@muhlenberg.edu. We’re always looking for new volunteers!

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS (2018-2019)

President: Alison Bashford – alisonbashford@muhlenberg.edu

Vice President: Samantha Shera – samanthashera@muhlenberg.edu

Secretary: Calista Bender – calistabender@muhlenberg.edu

Treasurer: Hannah Gura – hannahgura@muhlenberg.edu

MIDDLE SCHOOL VISITS: NeuroConnections members do a large amount of community outreach each year. Our main outreach involves visiting middle schools in the Lehigh Valley to run fun neuroscience activities with students. A few pictures from our work with students at Roberto Clemente Charter School can be found here and here. We’ll be visiting South Mountain Middle School this fall to run sheep brain dissections and other fun activities.

MUSIC & MEMORY: In a new collaboration with the Fleming Memory Center at Lehigh Valley Health Network, ‘Berg students have the opportunity to implement the Music & Memory program with senior citizens in the Lehigh Valley. This program brings music to elderly individuals and shows that exposure to music from their youth can lead to improved cognitive function and mood. If you haven’t heard about the program before, see this video for examples of the amazing effects it can have.

BRAIN PARTY: Every April (date TBA), Muhlenberg students work alongside students from other Lehigh Valley colleges (Lafayette, Moravian, Lehigh, Cedar Crest, and DeSales) to run a science education day (aka Brain Party) at the DaVinci Science Center. The club runs at least one or two booths that demonstrate fun neuroscience activities with children and adults that visit the event.

SOCIAL EVENTS: NeuroConnections holds club meetings several times per semester and holds many community-building events for its members (e.g., movie showings, grad school/research talks). More details about dates and times for these events will be announced as they are made available!
